How do you prefer to play? Single Player/Mutiplayer/MMO/GaaS

So as I've aged I'm finding the way I play changing. I used to be all about the online shooter, from Quake Arena through to CoD:MW I would be that guy who didn't even touch the single player campaign.

But now, I think just can't stand multiplayer and I'm all about single player and story. Multiplayer is just too stressful for me. Even MMOs I just want to do as much as I can solo. The nearest I get to multiplayer is Drivatars on Forza.

Has anyone else shifted in how they play?

There’s nothing that turns me off faster than “designed for 4 player co-op”.

I’ll play a lot of different kinds of games. CoD/Halo (campaign and VS multiplayer), Paladins/Rogue Company (hero shooters), The Division (GaaS), For Honor/Smash Bros (fighting) or Last of Us (campaign).

However, the consistent thread is that I’ll pretty much always be playing solo. Partly because people I know don’t play the games I play and partly because having to arrange play dates with 1-3 people regularly is just a nightmare. Then there’s randos, which...my god. I’m pretty glad most random matchmaking is silent these days as I remember the Halo 2/3 and MW2 days. Now a days if I’m forced into teams on Fortnite it’s very loud French kids most of the time.

I’ve done pretty much everything you can do in Division 1/2 solo except for the raids and enjoyed my hundreds of hours in both. I’m also over level 100 in Paladins and about 85% of that is playing solo as well. Prestiged 6 times in CoD WW2 and that was almost entirely solo. I’m on my 6th Re-up in Gears 5 and yup, solo.

The one genre I just fail to get into is Battle Royale. I’ve enjoyed Fortnite, Apex, Warzone, Realm Royale and even Hyper Scape but none have hooked me to where I play nothing else but that. I can play for 1-2 hours then I’m over it for the day. There ones that don’t have a solo mode are much less friendly to dip into as well.

I love playing online coop with friends especially at the moment outside of that I like to stick to one big single player game I can sink my teeth into through the weeks. My most recent single player which I loved from start to finished and sunk 75+ hours into was death stranding which seems to be such a contentious game but I truly loved the world, story, and characters in that game and was really sad to finish it and finally put it down. Outside of all that I'm still playing World of Warcraft got the latest expansion purchased and happy the release of the expansion got pushed back because there is just too many games half the time to really give my old friend some love sometimes

Single player for me. I just can't be dealing with all the drama that you have to deal with online. Of course I understand the trash talk, but that gets rapidly overtaken by people just being total dicks. I'd like to have a shot at Fall Guys or something similar, but that would be it.

Gotta be SP or GaaS for me now, I just can't be dedicated enough for MP games.

I remember playing Counter Strike, Wolfenstein etc back in the day and loved the multiplayer aspect. Nowadays, I feel too old to participating in any player versus player shooters. They're also extremely toxic environments, not helped by the pay-to-win mechanics adopted by almost every developer nowadays as well as the Youtube/Twitch culture.

Love a co-op game or something which requires teamwork - Destiny for me what MASSIVE. Staying up trying to bash out raids, Nightfalls etc. The game can be so chill that most of the time the game takes a backseat as you're just shit-talking with others. Shame the second game had to hard reset everything and isn't anywhere near as exciting as the first.

Time is precious nowadays now that I have a little one, so found myself not playing bits of solo games - Something I can just turn on and off whenever. Luckily, PlayStation has it's fair share of beautiful single player games and experiences, so I've never been wanting for more. Ghost of Tsushima is the next one on my list, which I'll buy on launch of the PS5.

I would have also chosen couch co-op, but those games are becoming somewhat of a rarity nowadays. Plus, the Mrs isn't one for gaming although she loves watching me play and trolling me. Some games we've both liked experiencing together are the story-telling ones - Heavy Rain, LA Noire, Telltale games etc.

I play a fair mix of SP and MP with friends. Mostly Warzone, Destiny 2 and SnowRunner with friends. Got my brother and a few friends into WZ when we first went into lockdown and still playing together most weekends.
SP wise I'll play anything with a good story or immersive world.

As someone who has just recently came back into playing games after nearly ten years, I find myself not really that bothered with playing multiplayer at all. I prefer a good story and a game to play by myself in all honesty.

One thing that I find suprising, I don't think multiplayer has truly moved on that much in the last decade? I could be wrong, as I've only just dabbled in a few games here and there but I remember when I first got Xbox Live and there seemed to be a much more engaging community online and there was always an excitment around who you could be playing next.

Then again I might be wrong and I've been playing the wrong games!

I avoid multiplayer most of the time nowadays it's just not a fun or exciting experience I much prefer coop experiences with friends but even that hasn't really moved that much either.

Definitely like my single player experiences where I can chill out and just take it all in.
